1954 Jaguar XK120 'Special Equipment'

Story and History

Ordered new by Emperor of Vietnam
Very well maintained

Here we have a unique opportunity to acquire a very interesting piece of Jaguar history, a 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE Drophead Coupe, originally ordered by the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai. The car a testament to the refined taste of a man known for his exquisite choices.

The Jaguar XK120, introduced in 1948, was an instant hit on both sides of the Atlantic, with its brand new 3.4 Litre 6 cylinder DOHC XK engine. It was a fast, beautiful, and a romantic car with a fully retractable hood and wind up windows, making it a must-have accessory for Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable who had one in period. In the UK, it excelled on the race track and became a successful rally car.

The XK120 Drophead Coupe emerged as a response to the market's desire for a more instantly usable hood and a little more 'Old English' charm and refinement. It features a lined Pram type hood, easily raised & lowered in seconds, larger doors with wind-up windows, and a Burr Walnut fascia with a wonderful array of instruments dominating the cosy cabin. It is a civilised car indeed for long distance touring and also urban use, but still with its sporting accents and heritage.

This car, finished in a striking Black exterior colour with Biscuit interior, comes with its original Chassis Frame No.: S 617750 and possesses its original Engine No.: W 9311-8S (stamped correctly on both cylinder block and head) and its original numbered body. All these details are confirmed on its original identity plate AND Heritage Certificate. The car also features Borrani 16” wire wheels with triple eared knock-off spinners, enhancing its sporting originality.

The car has been part of an eclectic Jaguar-based classic car collection in the UK and has been maintained by Jaguar specialists since 2014 and is in excellent condition, ready to be enjoyed for the forthcoming season.

This is a rare opportunity to own a great car with an unusually good and fascinating history. The car's interesting past, combined with its excellent condition and performance, make it a unique and valuable addition to any collection.
