1974 Bristol 411

Story and History

1974 Bristol 411 series IV - completely rebuilt by Bristol Cars Ltd

We first owned this remarkable 411 just over a year ago when we took her into our own garage and enjoyed her for ourselves before launching her on the website

She comes into her own on long journeys and a trip to Belgium for the Centenary of the Great War was a very moving moment

At 8 o'clock (20.00 hours) every evening the traffic through the "Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing" is stopped and buglers of The Last Post Association play Last Post followed by Reveille in a daily ceremony

We subsequently sold her to one of our regular customers, an Apothecary from Northern Germany, who has had Bristols before, who again has enjoyed the considerable ground covering capabilities of this superb grand tourer and trips to and from Germany have been interlaced with others to Holland

She is still in completely superb condition (new air conditioning compressor, overhauled carburettor) and in our minds probably the nicest 411 anywhere

Below is the description from when we listed her last year:-

Considered the ultimate 411 specification the series V benefits from the larger quad headlamps and also the uprated 6.6 litre V8 engine providing sparkling performance

My fathers chum, Reggie Cosford, had a similar example delivered brand new in 1974 and it certainly created a stir for it was not only expensive but exclusive too

Until a few years ago many 411's were in sorry condition - fortunately now this model is beginning to receive the acknowledgement it deserves and examples are finding themselves in the restoration shop on a more frequent basis

Ours has been taken to pieces and restored by Bristol Motors themselves and finished in the most delicious colour scheme, which really suits the svelte lines

They have included within the history folder a list of previous owners, all of the bills from the 2000's (more of which below), the original delivery note from the factory in Filton to the showrooms in Kensington, where she is listed as a Show Car, a period brochure and 100 page instruction and maintenance manual

Lustrous royal blue metallic coachworks are complimented by rich cashmere leathers and dark blue wilton carpets inside

Bodywork was taken back to bare metal / brightwork all rechromed / Avon safety wheels refurbished / uprated Halogen headlamps / replacement front and rear windscreens / light smoke tinting to all glass / new Motolita steering wheel / refinished dark walnut veneers / new air conditioning system / new stereo speakers / retrimmed seats and doors cards / remodelled rear seats with integrated head rests / separate head rests to front seats / additional sound deadening (now super quiet at high speeds) / new seat belts to front and rear / rebuild electric sunroof (an original fitment to this car) / alcantara headlining / rebuilt braking system / replaced suspension system with uprated handling pack / fully trimmed boot with carpeting to matching the interior

The list goes on and on, indeed the last owner assures me that both the engine and gearbox have also been rebuilt and from my own perspective it stands this assertion, as driving her on various journeys (trips from London to Ypres and back for instance) the drive train is taught, quiet, refined and very powerful

Now receiving the accreditation deserved, 411's are a brilliant drive and also in our eyes, the best looking of all the V8 Bristol's
