1986 Jaguar XJ SC

Story and History

1986 Jaguar XJ - SC 45.000 miles only

I remember well, the time when one of my fathers' business partners, John Levy a Board Member of M & S at the time, was waxing lyrical about the new XJ – SC

How brilliant that again, there was an open top Jaguar, he said. Both my father and their other partner all agreed that it was a 'top' move by Jaguar

Remember after the E Type Jaguar when, from fear of the rumoured US legislation many journalists, manufacturers and car enthusiasts felt that open top motoring would never be available again

Times change and after a period of another 8 years here was the 'new XJ – SC' with 2 targa roof panels above the head of the front seat passengers and the convertible rear section

The roofs were utterly dependable in operation, with no or very little wind noise, and hardly any scuttle shake too

Whilst the 5.3 litre V12 engine producing 285bhp with the new HE heads, was turbine like and with so much torque - easy performance was a given

Not many were produced for the full convertible was introduced quite soon afterwards (1988) and whilst very pretty, removing the window frames and the roll-over hoop produced the unwanted, above mentioned, scuttle shake

Our XJ – SC has travelled a mere 45.000 since new, is backed up with the original book pack, service voucher booklet and sundry service invoices and a myriad of MoT certificates

There have been on 6 owners since first registered, with one family, father and son, keeping her since 1989 when 16.000 miles had been accumulated until 2015 when the mileage had risen to 41.500

The previous but 1 onwer, a continual customer of ours for 25 years, had undertaken a little of his usual whim and spent nearly £10.000 on mechanical works (£4.000) some interior work with alcantara headlining and other trim detailing (£1.150) with a high quality repaint (£6.000)

A nicer example you would be hard pressed to find – lovely colours both inside and out, fully detailed engine bay, ice cold air conditioning and mechanically more than on the button

There are few bargains in the classic car world, but these are set for a sharp market rise once enthusiasts realize what value they represent
