1971 Range Rover

Story and History

1971 Range Rover Classic 'A' Chassis series

Supplied by us to the last owner 5 years ago this wonderful and very early example (June 1971) has had only 4 owners from new

As such an early car she features all of the impossible to obtain and lovely to have bits and pieces - to include most unusually the early seat mechanism with but one handle per seat

Later cars had a second handle fitted to the outside of the seat so that entry to the rear from the outside was made easier

Also the fascia doesn't suffer from all of the badly filled wholes so many suffer with - drilled for telephone fitment, extra gauges, compass's, St Christopher badges and similar

Similarly unusual was her having a single owner until 1988 when a local Range Rover Register Member heard that she was going to be sold, stepping in before anyone else could beat him to it

He used her for a couple of years and then undertook a complete restoration - everything was attended to (engine, gearbox, axles, bodywork & interior etc) and the way she drives is a testament to the quality of works carried out

A few sensible upgrades were included such as a full stainless steel exhaust, with free flow manifolds, a kenlow electronic fan, electronic ignition and power assisted steering

The seats and door cards were retrimmed in tan herring bone cloth, as used in the latter 1970's for Range Rover interiors, whilst the floors and boot arear were carpeted to match

Another Register Member helped out during these works and when the second owner decided to sell after 10 more years it was this chap who opted to buy her before anyone else got the chance

He kept her for 5 years and we were very lucky to have bought her directly from this man, the third owner

The car had covered only 11.000 miles subsequent to the restoration at this stage

We then sold her to her fourth owner, a city man with a home in Suffolk, where he kept her for general running around together with his other classic cars

A set of Land Rover seat covers were sourced and fitted over the re-trimmed seats at this stage, best to keep the original seats in top condition

A nominal mileage has been completed in this period of 5 years, taking total since restoration to 18.000

Entrusting most works to us since his ownership we have recently traced and fitted an original Fairey Overdrive unit which operates perfectly on 3rd and 4th gears, making for better top end acceleration and more importantly easier cruising on main roads with much better economy too

A very special example indeed with a fantastic specification together with very many original features
