1971 Mercedes Benz 280SL Pagoda LHD - Restored Condition

1971 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda

What a fantastic example of the timeless and ever iconic Mercedes Benz Pagoda SL, designed by the renowned Paul Bracq, and with a specification such as this, all the more enticing.

As one of the last examples produced she was first delivered to the USA in 1971, and lived in the dry climates of California, explaining the simply gorgeous condition, resplendent in metallic blue paintwork, which positively glistens in the sunshine.

The interior is simply sumptuous, having been re-trimmed in our shop earlier this year, where fresh hides & carpets abound – this Pagoda has them in spades with seats, door cards & fascia trim all in parchment hide & matching perfectly the 'Super-wool' carpets which, whilst non-standard are much more comfortable, even luxurious, than the standard teutonic fare. A nice finishing touch are the new inertia reel seat belts, colour coded to match the paintwork & fitted with period correct chrome buckles.

Specified with sundym glass, air conditioning, power assisted steering, head rests, top-tint windscreen, bumper over riders and automatic transmission, this SL certainly has all the equipment one could wish for, and would have been regarded as super rarefied when on the streets when new. Naturally when in the trim shop the original Hard Top was treated to a new headlining, wood refurbishment & leather grab handles too.

She was imported to Holland and was treated to a restoration, including but not limited to, a repaint, various new trim pieces, rubber seals, re-chroming and detailing, and was bought to England by a good friend of ours.

She was treated to a valet, full mechanical check over and all the necessary works carried out by Daniel Mayo, an independent mechanical engineer from Guildford, ensuring it was in fine fettle and ready to use. He replaced the seatbelts, steering wheel and gearknob, lined the fuel tank and cleaned and painted the under bonnet area and the chassis rails, naturally being a dry state car there was very little work needed here. This chap even went as far as to improve the under bonnet detailing by soda blasting the manifolds and replacing the bulkhead trim!

Upon arrival with us, and following the beautiful interior retrimming, we naturally gave the car a fluid service and full check over, finding that nothing was required with the exception of a minor band adjustment to the transmission, to which of course we have attended,

Currently garnering an enormous amount of attention in the Mews, we think this 280SL in such a striking colour combination and being in such fantastic condition represents a wonderful opportunity for those wishing to enjoy elegant motoring.
