1971 Mercedes Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe
One of the last of the original 243 RHD Coupes produced and complete with all books and papers too
A very original example, or so it appears, although upon reading through the nice history folder it is clear that 25 years ago the car was repainted, retrimmed and also had the engine stripped and rebuilt
In the intervening 25 years very little mileage has been covered and the restoration works have mellowed nicely
The bumpers are pin sharp - important on these as they are so expensive to replace or repair and the paintwork is still lovely
Some chrome is that with which she was supplied when new and is showing signs of the brass coming through underneath - through decades of polishing, of course
The interior is nicely "sat in" and really rather delightful - if anything let's it down I would suggest the standard woodwork applied to the fascia by Mercedes is just not up to the equivalent fitted at Crewe or Coventry
Then again Mercedes were always excellent engineers, but they did lack that gentile touch of the English and it shows with their interior finishings'
The last owner bought her from the chap who had the restoration work carried out 25 years ago and he has also ensured that the sunroof works perfectly, as do the windows, and the injectors have been recently overhauled too - due to lack of use probably
All of these works were carried out by renowned Mercedes expert, Steve Redfearn. Trained as a qualified technician at Mercedes Benz, he was so well thought of that he eventually went on to become in charge of training official Mercedes technicians. He now has his own workshops, where naturally his speciality is Mercedes cars from the 1960's and 1970's
With all of the works recently completed she performs exceedingly well and is quite a joy, even in heat of central London's rush hour traffic - as we can testify
It is unusual to find a Coupe of such quality, with very low ownership in the last 30 years, maintained to the highest standards, offered at a very reasonable price and with possibly the ultimate specification of electric roof and all 4 windows too, and remember there were so few of these made when new in RHD, as they were really, really expensive
