1961 Bentley S2

Story and History

1961 Bentley S2 Continental 2 door by HJ Mulliner

We do so like these Coupes - also known as the Flying Spur 2 door, as their front wing line is the same as the traditional Flying Spur

All of the HJ Mulliner Continental designs were warmly greeted when new, and since when all generations of Bentley enthusiasts have lusted after them - just as we do

This example is an impressive piece and has as a magnificent recent history

The last 2 owners, since the mid 1990's, have always carried out maintenance and fettling by the local specialists, with scant regard for expense - fortunately most owners of 1950 - 60 Continental owners do the same!

During this period all invoices are attached in the history folder and the array of invoices is amazing - brakes, transmission, carburettors, air conditioning, veneers, steering, suspension, exhaust, bare metal paint (probably this could be re finished now after many years and Tours - see below) and most recently in 2015, with less than 2.000 miles since, the engine was fully rebuilt

BC 15 CZ first life in the area of Nottingham, UK used by Brevitt Shoes Ltd, with the delightful plate SXW 1. She stayed here with her nominated user A. Atlas Esq., until in the 1970s the car was exported to the States, and spent a further 15 years out there; with work in California documented in the file.

When repatriated in 1990 she was re-allocated with the original registration "SXW 1" and this number remains the chassis for the UK

Being one of only 89 produced, it is clear that these magnificent Bentley's were a cut of the normal and the price was astronomical for the time

Chassis records state that when built in 1961 she was finished beautifully Tudor Grey with Red upholstery and delivery through Jack Barclay Ltd, of Mayfair

Most unusually, BC15CZ has been specified with a sunshine roof as well as, electrically controlled aerial and windows, wheel operated front vents, split cushion to rear seats, radio, flashing headlamps with column control, luggage straps, map light, Marchal horn and Marchal headlamps with yellow bulbs - it can be clearly seen that A.Atlas Esq of Brevitt Shoes Ltd, was an owner who indulged in some serious Continental (pun intending!) driving

In the 1970's, probably in the US and very well installed to, there is air condition - charming to behold and effective in use too

Charming to are the current owners, friends of ours, have carried the mantle as offered by the original owner

During their tenure trips as logged, not an extensive list, but you get the picture I'm sure, makes the most interesting reading and stories abound

Route Maps purchased for the following Countries will have been found in the glove box at one time or another:-

France, Switzerland, Italy, China, Jordon, and South America

A feeble jaunt down a Country Lane seems a half hearted effort in comparison!
