1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud

Story and History

1959 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud DHC by HJ Mulliner Design 7410

This superb, original example, is the very last of this design to be completed out of a total of only 21 - not surprising really, when you consider that the price before any special features was over £8.000

Very few people had this sort of money available

Hand built by the Mulliner craftsmen, of the total produced 12 were LHD and the other 9 were in RHD, as is SKG33, and what an incredible job the designers and craftsmen did

Noted experts have stated such - in Old Car 1990, when this example was road tested the author asserts "I cannot think of any other large post-war drophead that can compare with it for elegance, save perhaps for the Park Ward Bentley Continental"

In 2004 the highly loveable, hugely respected character, and valuations officer for the BDC, Bill Medcalf desribed SKG33 as "absolutely superb, perhaps best described as a Masterpiece"

The beauty of coach building is that for a hefty price a customer gets a thing of real style and should his pockets run deep enough he can then specify individual items to personalise his new possession

Our new owner had pockets deep enough to specify not just electric front windows, electric aerial, electric hood operation, master switch for hood & windows, transferable head rests, an 8 piece fitted luggage set (Mulliner drawing number 7517), a load cover for the boot, whitewall tyres and most interestingly of all, tiny little rear wing fins - the only version of this design with these delicate little options

Ergo, this car is "unique" - an overly used word but correct in this case

When supplied by Rippon Bros Ltd, to the first owners Dewsbury home in July 1959 it must have seemed light years ahead of its' time

In 1978 air conditioning was also fitted and is extremely effective, giving this convertible possibly the ultimate specification

There is a complete listing of all owners, indicating only 8 private keepers with two appearing to be father (1980 - 1986) and son (1996 - 2004), at which point there is an attestation on file validating the vehicles history and also evidencing mileage at that time believed to be 48.000

It also appears she left these shores for Australia after 1987 and was re-imported by famous pre-war coach building company Thrupp & Maberly Ltd in 1989

Subsequently with a trail of MoT's since (1987, 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012 & 2014) we can see a consistent increase giving us a total now of 53.000

SKG33 really is in superb condition maintaining all of the original specification and has been used variously on international rally's and tours in some amazing places (Borneo 2005 & Arabian Gulf 2009 !!)

As such a special car she is listed in several books including the wonderful new Davide Bassoli reference book (Every Cloud has a Silver Lining - Nubes Argentea, page 135) as well as the Dalton Watson's books on Rolls-Royce coach work

Considered to be at the highest peak of elegance for the coach built drop head coupe, design 7410 is a pure delight to behold and this example is surely one of the very best post war drop heads available for sale
