1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Story and History

1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider LHD - Completely restored

These fabulous Pininfarina designed masterpieces were initially conceived by Alfa as being solely for the US market - however so well received were they upon their introduction in the mid fifties and understandably so, that European deliveries became common place - well perhaps common is the wrong word here, but you get the drift

Weighing in at only 860kgs and with the sweet, smooth, free revving twin cam Alfa 1290cc engine spinning up to over 6.000 rpm these little gems run as well as they look

Chassis AR 1495 06345 was both produced and sold in the month of March 1959 to NSU Werke, Germany and remained there until Dietmar Spriestabacher sold her to John Colley from the Tower Hotel, London in 1992

John more or less left her in storage for a long while and eventually Nigel Smeal, of London, took charge and a undertook a full restoration

The tub was sandblasted which revealed surprisingly small amounts of rust and after full preparation she was painted in the traditional Alfa red seen here - she was red prior to this restoration, although factory records show she was indeed AR301, Sky Blue in 1959

All trim was replaced (by Coburn's naturally), new rubber seals all round and if you care to look at the underside, you will see that it shines almost as much as the bits you can see on the top side! - virtually everything was replaced from front to rear

The well renowned Alfa specialist Bob Dove (40 years experience in performance engines - Formula 5000, BTCC etc etc) has built the engine and gearbox, so these are in first class order, as well as bullit proof

The most recent owner saw the Alfa during restoration, and was so taken with the quality of works that he said he would buy her upon completion - which he did and sat her in his collection alongside the Aston's and Bentley's etc

Early Giullietta Spider's in this condition are hard to come by and the completely beautiful design from the astoundingly brilliant Pininfarina, combined with the mechanical flare of Alfa Romeo gives you one of the best driving experiences this side of a quarter of a million pounds - Lancia Aurelia's beware
